A note to fellow creatives

because we all need a little encouragement

. . .

You owe it to yourself to explore your gift.

Being an artist is hard work! There’s blood, there’s sweat, there’s tears. Sometimes there’s drinking coffee way too late at night to meet a deadline. There may also be sitting in mud puddles just so you can get the perfect angle. Oh, the things we do for the love of the craft. But we power through it! Because there is a creative force behind all of us. You know that. You can feel it pushing you forward. Often, you can hear the muse of inspiration whisper in your ear.  It creeps on us in the early hours of the morning, or just before we close our eyes at night. And it’s so good when it goes as we envisioned.

But sometimes, being an artist is a challenge. You wonder if your work is good enough. You wonder if you are good enough. And you feel so alone at times, overwhelmed. There’s just so much that you want to do! You have so many experiences and ideas to share with the world.

Sometimes we all need to slow down just a little. We need to remember that there is no finish line to creation. As long as you are learning and doing, you are growing. Art is about evolution. It doesn’t matter how many times you fail. It doesn’t matter how many junk works of art you make. That’s part of the process. No one wakes up a master or a masterpiece. And you will have that huzzah moment if you keep at it.

Artists, we take ourselves a little too seriously. Let’s make the choice to allow joy into our work.  Let’s allow discovery. Let’s remember to live in the moment. The act of creation is just as important as the creation. I want you to have the confidence to explore your creativity to the fullest – like a child learning how to swim. Eventually, you’ll flow with it. I promise you won’t sink. So stick with it friend. The world needs your gift.
